Yesterday's daily message brought in a large response. I guess the message
resonated with many people.
I think we each intuitively know how we need to treat our bodies, minds and
spirits. You can only push so much, either physically, mentally or psychically.
Then you need to pull back a bit, just for a little while, and allow your body,
mind and spirit to relax and rejuvenate.
I guess that's my way of saying, "Go with the flow". By all means push,
strive and work hard. But learn to listen to your own innate wisdom and intuition.
Oftentimes you'll find that the very moment you stop pushing so hard and
let things happen...is when they really begin to open up for you.
One message in particular interested me. It was from Cynthia, a girls' swim
team coach, who was interested in my new program, "Dynamic Flexibility:
The Secret To Healthy, Pain-Free Joints, Limber Muscles and Maximum
Mobility" - http://www.overcomeasthma.com/dynamic_flex.html.
This is a lady who is coaching 8 to 9 year old girls, and already has them
doing a comprehensive program of stretching. Yet, she is investing in my
program, because she knows if she can pull out one or two new exercises,
or a new approach, that can help contribute to the development of her team,
she will be way ahead.
This is an important point. I have always read or listened to a book or program
with the intent of learning something I can apply.
If I discover one new idea, exercise, approach or strategy - one new distinction-
I can begin to "play with" and weave into my life, then I consider that book or
program to be invaluable.
On the other hand, if the thing is too complex, difficult to understand, or
simply not practical, I tune it out.
This is why I deliberately did not include every single stretch I ever learned in
the Dynamic Flexibility program, like a lot of stretching books out there do.
Instead, I focused on the exercises I know provide an incredible foundation
of limberness and mobility - and are some of the most effective at eliminating
nagging aches and pains.
And, as with all of my programs, I cut to the chase and give you an approach
that works!
Here's one other thing that I like about Cynthia: she programs cycles of harder
training sessions interspersed with less difficult sessions for her team.
Yes, periodicity and cyclical programming has been around for ages in the
athletic arena. But this coach is applying high level principles and best practices -
for 8 and 9 year olds!
Not only that, she is teaching them an invaluable lesson, for their athletic
careers AND for life:
She is teaching them the importance of cycling between hard and soft,
between pushing and allowing, between working hard and relaxing.
You can (and should) build this natural cycle into everything you do. Into
every day, every week, every month, and every year. Even into your
breathing.
Most adults I know don't do this very well. But it's critical to managing
your energy and results, no matter what you are working on or trying to
achieve.
You Can Do It!
