I've had a lot of emails from people curious about
how they can have their cake and eat it too - the
subject of several of my Daily Tips last week.
Yes, it's true: you don't have to go to low-carb
hell to lose a significant amount of weight. You
can actually eat carbs - including starchy, sugary
carbs - and still lose weight.
How can this be?
Well, let me be clear about one thing. I'm not
giving you license to go crazy.
If you gorge on starchy and sugary foods, you will
not lose weight. And you will not put on the lean
mass that most people need to add...lean mass
which, by the way, burns more calories and makes
it even easier to peel off more fat or to
maintain your ideal weight once you get there.
Making sugary, starchy carbs a centerpiece of your
diet will also set you up for fun things like
diabetes and heart disease. (Yes, its the processed
carbs, NOT the natural fat from meat and dairy that
actually contributes to heart disease.) And, if you
have any kind of respiratory condition, such as
asthma, eating lots of carbs can cause
bronchoconstriction and wheeziness.
So why am I so keen on getting you to eat some
carbs?
Well, as I mentioned last week, your body and your
brain need carbs to function. If you've ever tried
a no-carb or low-carb regimen, I'm sure you have
experienced the headaches and relentless fatigue and
malaise that typically accompany them.
Sure, this "only" lasts for about the first two
weeks. But, if you're like me, you can't afford a
single day of headaches and fatigue. There's too
much goin on!
Here's the other thing: reducing your carbs to
incredibly low levels will help you lose some quick
weight. But it's very, very difficult to maintain this
type of restricted dietary regimen. More often than not,
people tend to come off these diets, binge like
crazy, and gain most or all of the weight right
back - within a matter of weeks.
Here's one more thing that irritates me: most of the
low carb programs stick you with certain types of
vegetables, and tell you that most fruits are off
limits.
They shout "high glycemic index" and "sugar". They
pick on such luscious, healthy fruits as the banana.
The banana is health and energy on wheels! Full of
so many vitamins and nutrients that I could write
a Daily Tip just on bananas (and maybe I will one
day).
For today, here's what you should know about bananas:
despite their high glycemic index, and despite the
fact they contain sugar...eating a slightly-less-than-ripe
banana will help you lose weight.
You see, the complex fiber in the banana makes you
feel full, so you eat less. And - here's the really
good part - the type of fiber found in bananas creates
by-products in your intestine (when it is being
digested) that help block the conversion of carbs
to fuel.
This forces your body to burn fat instead. How 'bout
that!
SO take that, all you crazy people who tell us that
fruits are off limits.
Having said all this, it IS true that manipulating
the carbs in your diet can help you achieve
substantial improvements in your body composition,
as well as more consistent energy levels and
mood.
But you have to be smart about it.
In the April issue of the Dynamic Fitness & Health
Letter - http://www.bestbreathingexercises.com/NLInfo.html -
I tell you about a strategy that allows you to eat
your bread and have cake too.
You see, it's not just about the quantity of carbs
you eat, or even the quality. There is another "x factor"
that can make the difference between putting on the
pounds and shedding them.
Putting this x-factor to work for yourself is easy
to do. The key is learning how to apply this strategy
exactly. And this is what I share with you in the April
issue.
How can you get your hands on this information?
It's easy: simply sign up to receive a FREE
issue of my Dynamic Fitness & Health Letter.
When you sign up for the Dynamic Fitness & Health
Letter, every month you will receive cutting edge
information, ideas and inspiration on exercise,
nutrition, breathing and more.
My approach is unique because I integrate a number
of different modes and approaches - ancient and
oldtime as well as leading-edge...western as well
as eastern...exercises to build muscle as well as
exercises to cultivate internal energy and
power...all with the goal of helping you focus on
what's important and effective so you can achieve
better health and longevity.
From breathing, to exercise, to eating and
supplementation,to developing optimal mental and
spiritual habits...I can help you achieve results -
AND enjoy the process.
Here's another thing: a lot of what I have to share
with you runs counter to the prevailing conventional
"wisdom" you find in the major media magazines,
books and websites.
Over the years, I've tried the conventional approaches,
and even many of the fads. This stuff is pablum for
the masses...much of it mushy, bland gruel that
unfortunately doesn't work over the long term. Why do
you think obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and
other serious and chronic health conditions continue
to explode?
I promise you, there is a better way.
